Nicki looked herself over in the mirror one last time. She sighed
and came to the conclusion that it was time to go. She grabbed her clutch off
of her dresser then exited the room.
"Ok, Can, I'm leaving." She said as she entered the
living room of the apartment.
"Why didn't you have him come get you?"
"I still don't want him knowing where I live. I'm not used to
this dating stuff anymore."
"You've been on like. . .five dates."
"Seven but that's beside the point." She sighed.
"Look, Brandon may or may not come get her tonight so I packed a overnight
bag just in case. You know he doesn't have the decency to call before coming
so, yeah."
"Ok. She's good here though, Nic. Why you always act like its
a problem?"
"I just don't wanna burden you, ya know?"
"Bitch." She rolled her eyes. "Is you leaving
now?"
"Yes." She laughed then turned her attention to her two
year old. "Come give mama kisses."
She walked towards her two year old as she slowly made her way to
her. When they were toe to toe she bent down and grabbed her face before
placing kisses on it.
"Mommy loves you little girl." She kissed her one last
time and the two year old smiled wide.
After two years she still couldn't wrap her mind around the
concept of having this tiny human being look so much like her and offer her
more love than she ever imagined having or deserving. Her daughter was truly
all she needed in life. Just the look in her eyes when she entered the room gave
her a feeling she'd never felt. Her father truly wasn't worth the skin he was
in but she still loved him for giving her life. After him she gave up on the
idea of love period until one of her friends approached her with the idea of a
double, blind date. She said yes and had been seeing the man every since. He
wasn't really her type at first but then she realized that "her type"
wasn't good for neither her or her daughter.
"You not gonna say it back?" She tickled her little
girl. "Tell me you love me."
"You love me." She smiled while pronouncing her 'l' as a
'w' to which her mother laughed.
"Alright. You can go." Candi huffed.
"Ok. Ok."
"You know how she gets." She said in reference to how
the child would throw a fit everytime her mother left.
"Yeah." She sighed. "I'm leaving."
"Alright." She stood and walked over to the two year old
and grabbed her hand. "Let me show you something, YaYa."
Nicki watched as Candi lead her over to the legos she had bought
her recently. She began to slowly inch towards the door when her attention was
fully on the blocks in front of her. She slipped out undetected and thanked
God. It always made her feel guilty for unnecessarily leaving her child.
When she got to the restaurant she simply gave the hostess his
name and she pointed her to his table. He stood when he saw her approaching.
She couldn't help but to smile back at him.
"Thank you."
"How was your day?"
"Good. Onya had her first day of school today."
"Did you cry?" He laughed.
"Yes." She laughed. "If it was an option she wouldn't go to school until it was time for kindergarten."
"What happened with her Pops watching her?"
She rolled her eyes, "I found out that he had random bitches watching my baby. Like, just any old female he was laying up with."
"Word?"
"Yeah." She sighed. "How was your day?"
"Good. Went riding today. When you gone let me take you?"
"Never." She laughed. "Who's gonna raise my kid once we crash?"
"Who said I was going to crash?" He laughed.
"Oh my gosh. Speaking of crashes..." She laughed. "Why does Onya like watching that shit? Like, she will sit and watch an action movie quietly, all the way through but be bouncing off the walls if I put on cartoons."
"Sounds like my kind of kid." He laughed.
"Yeah, she's funny." They smiled at each other before Nicki rolled her eyes and shook her head. "I'm sorry. I'm doing that thing again."
"What?" He laughed.
"Making everything about her."
"She's apart of you. It's expected."
"Thanks for understanding." She reached across the table and held his hand.
"There's nothing to understand." He laughed. "Except for when you cancel. I don't get that."
"If I have no one to watch her-"
"Bring her."
"But-"
"When we first hooked up we talked about having a relationship. It's impossible for me to have a relationship with you and not her."
"You wanna meet her?" She smiled.
"It's up to you."
She folded her lips before speaking. "I just need to make sure that we're on the same page. Her father does enough of bringing random women around her. I don't want to do that. Especially because I'm raising a woman."
"I get that."
"Are you in this for the long run?"
He sighed and thought about it. He knew from the moment that she said that she had a kid that dating her would mean taking on a lot of responsibility and understanding. He couldn't shake her though. All he thought about was her. He was scared to step into a child's life but he would never do anything to hurt Onya or her mother.
"Yeah. As long as you are." He said and she smiled.
They both laugh as they approached the front door. Nicki turned to put the key in the door but stopped. She turned and looked up at him. They stared at each other before both going in for a kiss. Everything felt so right between the two of them. Nicki pulled away and opened the door.
"Yaya!" She called as she walked into the living room with Safaree following.
She laughed at the covered lump on the couch beside Candi that giggled. Candi shook her head and laughed. She smiled at Safaree who nodded in return. Nicki walked over to where Onya was hiding.
"Hmmm. I wander where Onya is." The toddler began laughing. "Is this her right here?!" She began tickling her.
"Mommy!" She appeared from under the cover and hugged Nicki. She put her hands on her mothers cheeks and looked in her eyes. "I missed you."
"I missed you more." She smothered her with kisses and she laughed.
"You still need me?" Candi asked.
"No, thanks, Can."
"No problem." She began collecting her things. "Nice seeing you again, Safaree."
"Same." He smiled. Onya glanced at him before running to Candi.
"TT leave?"
"Yup." Candi said.
"No, we have princess sleepover."
"Not tonight." Candi laughed. "I'll see you late baby."
"Bye bye."
"Be safe, Candi. Text me when you're home." Nicki said.
"Text me." Onya said and they all started laughing.
"Alright."
Nicki laughed at Safaree who looked terrified. Onya wasn't helping the situation by staring him down.
"You can sit down." Nicki laughed as she sat and he sat a few inches away from her. She laughed. "We're not in middle school, Safaree."
"Once your pitbull knows that then we can be cool." She laughed and hit him.
"Leave my baby alone!" They both laughed. "Come here, Onya. I want you to meet mommy's new friend."
Onya slowly walked to Nicki while keeping her eyes on Safaree. Nicki pulled her up on her lap and she continued to stare at him. Nicki laughed even harder. Onya looked at her then back to the stranger.
"Hi, Onya." He smiled and her face remained stone. Nicki tried to hold in her laugh.
"Yaya, are you going to say "hi" to Safaree?" She looked at Nicki then back at Safaree and shook her head no. "You don't want to be his friend?" Onya shook her head no again. "Why?" The toddler shrugged.
"Aw, man." Safaree shook his head.
"Are you ok, Safaree?" Nicki asked sadly.
"No... I'll be fine though."
"What's wrong?" Nicki asked.
"Everyone was telling me how sweet princess Onya is. So, I came here to meet her in hopes that I could take her to get ice cream or something but she doesn't even like me." He frowned.
"You see that, Yaya?" Nicki shook her head. "No ice cream for you."
"No ice cream?" Onya asked sadly.
"You didn't want to be Safaree's friend so..." Nicki shrugged.
"I be Faree's friend. I say hi, mama. Hi, Faree."
Nicki laughed, "I don't think he believes you. He's still sad. Look."
Onya slid off of Nicki's lap and went to grab a handful of legos. She walked over to Safaree. She said his name but he kept his head down. She placed her legos at his feet and tapped him. He looked up.
"Play?"
Oh? Yall gone play me?
